Larnelle Harris: then & now

Larnelle Steward Harris, born July 6, 1947, is a gospel singer and songwriter.  During his 30-plus years of ministry, Harris has recorded 18 albums, won five Grammy Awards and 18 Dove Awards, and has had several number one songs on the inspirational music charts.

"Larnelle is the only person in history to be a member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Amateur Radio Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame "

A native of Danville, Kentucky, Harris started playing the piano at the age of nine.  His first formal vocal training came when he attended college at Western Kentucky University, from which he graduated in 1969.  Harris then became a part of the popular gospel touring group The Spurrlows (beginning as drummer).  He received notability for his solo work and as member of the Gaither Vocal Band from 1984 through 1987.

Larnelle is the only person in history to be a member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Amateur Radio Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame.  Admired by fans and peers alike for his majestic tenor voice, Larnelle has become the epitome of talent and integrity in a career that spans over three decades.  Larnelle has garnered numerous accolades for his music including five Grammy Awards, eleven Dove Awards (three of which were for Male Vocalist of the Year), and a Stellar Award, among other honors. He has garnered nineteen #1 radio singles and countless top 10 hits.  Songs such as "How Excellent Is Thy Name," "I Miss My Time With You," "I've Just Seen Jesus," plus many others, including his signature song, "Amen," are now considered modern classics.

From the White House to the danger zone of the 38th Parallel, Larnelle has impacted audiences across the globe with his music and ministry.  He was the first Christian artist to perform inside the Kremlin after the fall of the Soviet Union.  He is one of a handful of celebrities to receive the Ad Council's Silver Bell Award for Distinguished Public Service in recognition of his song "Mighty Spirit" as the theme song for the longest-running Public Service Announcement in television history.

Perhaps Harris' best-known songs are his duets with Sandi Patty, "More than Wonderful" (1984) and "I've Just Seen Jesus" (1986).  His song, "Mighty Spirit" was featured in a 1993 television campaign for the Points of Light Foundation, headed by President George H. W. Bush; he performed the song for Bush and his wife Barbara at the White House.  His recording of "All Along the Way," co-written by Greg Nelson and Dan Schafer, reached the No. 1 spot for five weeks on the CCM Christian Inspirational chart and No. 6 for the top songs of 1998.

Harris has appeared live on television series such as Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, The 700 Club, several Billy Graham crusades, and the Trinity Broadcasting Network.  He has appeared on numerous Gaither Homecoming shows, and his own Christmas special. In his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, Harris has made many appearances on the WHAS Crusade for Children, a long-running local telethon benefitting children's charities. In 1995, Harris was featured in the Warren Chaney docudrama, America: A Call to Greatness.

Harris continues to tour worldwide, recently singing for a gathering of the United Nations Ambassadors.  In addition to his numerous solo dates, Harris also travels with various tours including the Gaither Homecoming tour and the Sandi Patty & Friends tour.   Additionally, Harris will join the Ralph Carmichael Legacy Tour in 2013 as well as tour with Patty and renowned pianist Dino on "The Big 3" Tour. Harris and Steve Green often tour together and Harris, Green and Steve Amerson recently performed a “Three Tenors” concert at Carnegie Hall.  Wowing crowds with a voice that still soars with both soulfulness and tenderness, Larnelle continues to receive rave reviews for his performances.   CCM Magazine recently described Harris as having a “larger-than-life stage presence with impeccable vocal prowess."

Harris met his wife Cynthia (Mitzi) while both were students at at Western Kentucky University. They have two children Lonnie (Larnelle Jr.) and Teresa.  They have lived in Louisville for more than three decades.  Despite his schedule, Harris serves as a deacon in his home church, and previously served as its treasurer.  Harris is well-known within the gospel music industry for his reluctance to schedule performances that take him away from his family for any length of time.
