The Long Arms of CCM by Alan Scott

The Long Arms of CCM

As CCM listeners, we all come from various backgrounds.   Let’s face it, if we were interviewed during a focus group setting, we would realize we CCM lovers are a bag of mixed nuts.  Our religious and denominational affiliations and history are varied.  It’s safe to say, broad and deep.

CCM is a tool God utilizes to bring us all together under His colorful musical banner, no matter if churched or not.  As a perfect example, one can look no further than the current Contemporary Christian Music artists themselves.  The truth is we all have a variety of church music experiences.

At my church during the late 60s and 70s, CCM was looked upon as counterfeit Christian music. The only musical artists allowed to minister in our church in those days were chorales (small choirs), solo artists who sang soft arrangements of hymns, choral pieces and southern gospel artists.

I recall in 1976, when I was 16 years old, I had purchased an instrumental cassette of Andrae’ Crouch’s “My Tribute – To God Be The Glory.”  It was a soft ballad with a beautiful orchestral accompaniment.  No resident solo artist in our congregation had ever used an accompaniment track at that point, only using the piano and organ with the occasional acoustic guitar.  When the music director was told I wanted to use a pre-recorded track for my scheduled solo in an upcoming Sunday morning service, I was told the pastor had to hear it for his approval. Before I move on let me state, it gave me a sour feeling in my belly as I was already an accomplished vocalist in my high school, often arranging a live band as back-up.  You can imagine what happened.  The pastor sat in on a run-through in the sanctuary as I presented the, now, classic song.  He didn’t allow it.  After all, it had a brass section in the orchestra and timpani, as well.

At 16, I knew immediately there was an extreme fear that existed, along with extreme judgment, concerning selected instruments in the worship service.  Of course, I also recognized musical hypocrisy as my pastor and music director listened to Doug Oldham or Bill and Danny Gaither records, all of which had good production with full orchestra and percussion.  Honestly, I could’ve allowed their musical bias to brew deeply into bitterness to the point of leaving the church, but God had other plans.  My love for CCM artists grew as I continued to push updated music in my church.  Ten years later I would be headlong into joining the CCM radio industry serving up the best Christian artists cutting through the music bias in our churches in order to reach our generation on a musical level that could draw the ear.  In 1987, I was honored to be part of the on-air staff of KOJO/Dallas/Ft Worth, which in 1989 would be KLTY, as it still shines today.

In the next couple of weeks we will discover more of how CCM broke out of a rough birthing experience, gaining the ear of the church and who would be the pre-Christian community.

Needless to say, the CCM infant had long arms wrapping itself around the redeemed and the seekers on their search for God.  The movement continues to grow to this very day.

When were you introduced to CCM?  Leave a comment and tell us about your experience.

In His Grip,

Alan Scott

In 1973, a German statistician named E.F. Schumacher published a book called “Small is Beautiful.” In it he noted that industrial society is careening towards collapse thanks to its extraction of natural resources at an inexhaustible pace. He also proposed we scrap the current economic system in favour of “a lifestyle designed for permanence.”

I thought you did like mix it like the only 20 year old welcome to another episode of do you know what to do what do we have today we got a back cushion here that we're going to permanently solve the problem not using polyfill yes using actual foam poly foam we have done this before with polyfill in fact these were filled this back cushion right here was filled with polyfill and the problem with polyfill is you well know if you have it is that all the polyfill goes down to the bottom so the top it has the empty space it caves in it looks terrible it's awful and love it has to do with how we use it you know because we have people throw themselves on the back cushions pets pets sit on top of there they love to look out the window and they sit on top of the back cushions or your kids might be coming on to the sofa from the back smash em all down cuz look at the difference here look how this thing bounces back you're not gonna get that with this no you're not it's just not gonna happen it will never happen you can always replenish it if you want to what we do I fill you did a text we did a text on that and that is perfectly fine but you're gonna have to rinse and repeat that process over and over again yes time goes on right because it's just gonna start settling down the bottom exactly exactly so this is polyfill in case you don't know what it is is yep that's in your back cushions look at it's just light and fluffy it's made of oil so this is kind of fun making it rain that's right you're never gonna it's not gonna be permit so we're gonna show you how to permanently solve your problem with a boxed back cushion using poly foam all right and we're gonna discuss what kind of foam next all right so the next step is for us to show you what type of foam to get yes because a good product always starts with great material exactly now we've talked about foam beforehand in our previous text which was replacing of the seat cushion now that's a different type of foam right it's different in the density wise it is different in density wise the density of that foam was 26 now good quality it's great quality the higher the number for the density value 26 for exam Appl the better it is and that's the highest that we offer yes it is now this one right here is 18 density so why do we go lower in quality because our supplier who makes the density 26 foam mm-hmm does not have a softer compression Russian Thank You then 26 and 26 would be a brick right so again for most people density is quality compression is firmness so with this one in particular it is a compression of 20 doesn't seem like that much of a difference but trust me if they went from polyfill to a foam and the foam is like a brick they're not gonna be happy no they're not so this is definitely the softest that we are able to get and it is perfect for back cushions it is this is gonna solve your problem permanently if you have a boxed box and bahaha yeah my box back cushion and we talking about with box back cushion as you can see with that as a band right here this is a knife edge and there is no bands so they just saw it right down the middle right this is a different animal we'll discuss this hopefully in another text soon but yes you look at the difference yeah yeah that's perfect look at the difference see there you can imagine sorry go ahead good if you can imagine like we said it again pets sitting on top of their kids jumping up and down you own this that's what it is dealing with that's why you're here because you've got this problem yeah you know make it like new but we're not dealing with that one thing that we do want to warn you about and this is serious do not get 15 density at is complete trash it is so it's everywhere on the internet if you see it don't get it sometimes they won't tell you what density it is but if it's 15 or 1.
